This outdoor terrace on three levels is located in the heart of Dordrecht’s historic city centre. The garden belongs to a monumental building, previously a ‘Rhein Elbe’ warehouse. Such a characteristic home deserves an equally distinct outdoor space. Erik accepted the design challenge and rose to the occasion.
Garden with a view | The three-story space has great views over century-old listed buildings, including ‘Zeepaert’: one of the oldest dwellings in the Netherlands, with a gorgeous Gothic façade. Erik took into account the surrounding architectural and urban landscape. The lighting emphasizes the ancient brick walls around the garden, while the distinction with sleek modern materials provides architectural interest. Different-textured plants lessen the contrasts.
Privacy, ambience and comfort | A wooden walkway and staircase lead to the lower levels. The mid-level section presents two sitting areas. High anthracite-coloured planters with a stainless steel brim maximize privacy and screen the lounge area from unwanted views. The second sitting area on a raised wooden floor is furnished with a table and chairs in textilene fabric. White and dark grey planters in different heights add vertical interest. Planters are abundantly vegetated with evergreen ornamental grasses, boxwood and bamboo. Erik used eye-catching visual accent lighting to create a picturesque mood.
Urban atmosphere with a touch of green | Multi-stemmed Parrotia trees in custom-made planters along the path that runs parallel with the door are highly decorative and have spectacular foliage in autumn. At the base of the trunk grow blue flowering plants and ornamental grasses. The eye-catching purple water wall in the back provides a beautiful contrast to the authentic walls, while the grasses soften the transition.
Integrated outdoor kitchen | A staircase in steel leads to the lowest level, equipped with a custom design outdoor kitchen in teak wood and a Green Egg cooking system. A sliding glass door seamlessly connects the outdoor and indoor area. This multi-level garden is a private oasis in the city, combining ancient structures with a modern and exclusive design.
