Erik van Gelder renewed this existing garden for a Dutch couple, living just across the border in Essen (Belgium). The owners’ main requirements included a large patio near the kitchen and a roofed wellness area. Erik smartened up the garden and turned it into a classy outdoor space, reflecting the desires of the owners.
Stylish patio | A high-strength water-repelling sail provides protection from the elements, and creates a beautiful outdoor breakfast area. The canopy’s swooping look and geometric shade pattern makes it an attractive addition to this contemporary garden. From within the kitchen, you look at a low wall with built-in seating and water feature. The boxwood border that lines the patio features moon-inspired lamps that produce an enchanting glow.
Inspiring color scheme | The wellness area is a resort-like outdoor room with a Zen-inspired design. The materials and colours provide a harmonious blend: grey and cream-white stone strips, cream-white walls and ceiling, ceramic tiles (120 x 120 cm), and a warm red brown floating wood deck.
Vibrant and warm | The raised wood deck contains a sunken hot tub. The wall covered in wood slats enhances the space and accentuates its sensual atmosphere. Erik visually connected the outdoors with louvered roof panels and a wooden fence with uniform gaps between each plank – balancing shelter and transparency.
Erik incorporated some ‘natural’ works of art in the garden room as well. The cut-out in the wall shows the lush green behind it. And the wall arrangement from reindeer moss has a distinctive and bold impact.
